The World Has Not Ended Of Yet...

Although with reports of the tsunami in Asia, the Christmas snowfall in Brownsville, and the fact that the end of the Mayan Calendar approaches in seven years, I wouldn't be surprised if the evangelicals get something right. However, on a more pleasant note, many wonderful things happened since my last post.

Wonderful Thing #1: Christmas Happened
There was snow in Brownsville, Texas. I'm talking the southernmost tip of the United States border with Mexico, the southernmost tip of Texas, where 70 degree weather is considered "quite chilly" and all the fresas (read: aloof, snotty, usually rich Mexicans here on the border) bust out in their designer parkas and scarves and gloves. Here, in Brownsville, was the first white Christmas seen in over 100 years! Granted, there was only an inch and a half of snow, but for a place that averages over 100 degrees Farenheit in the summer, where the humidity is 100 percent for 95 percent of the year, and where people go to get away from the snow and cold, that's pretty darn impressive.

Wonderful Thing #1.5: I got lovely gifts for Christmas.
The Lord of the Rings Extended DVD Boxed Set. Mine, my own, my prrrecious!
A vintage sewing box complete with many supplies (basting ribbon, lace, thread, needles, buttons, zippers, pins, etc) to help me get started on another domestic art I hope to conquer.
Clothes!
Money!
A lovely turtleneck sweater from my best friend Kevin.
A beautiful brooch to adorn the up-and-coming-soon-to-be-knit-shawl from my good friend Irvine.
An absolutely adorable little wallet from Anna Ramirez, my sister's best friend and a lovely friend of mine as well.
A tin of Green Tea from the Asian Market in Houston from the dearest Myrant.
Birkenstock clogs (just what I wanted to complete my Austinite-hippie look).

Wonderful Thing #2: I saw Jan Chow who came from Singapore for Christmas!
Jan was a good friend of mine his senior year (my junior year) in high school. He, Irvine, Stephanie, Aaron, Michael and Carlos.. and I, formed a hang-out lunch group. But Jan isn't an American citizen. He's a resident, but he's a citizen of Singapore. Singaporian law states that all male citizens (after finishing high school) must spend two years in the army. So now, he's in his 1.5th year in the Army as a weapon's specialist. And let me tell you, he's gotten very very very attractive. No crew cut, though, which made him look slightly less sharp and imposing than he could have looked. But I got to go bowling with him and some of the old lunch buddies whom I haven't seen in about a year and a half!

Wonderful Thing #3: I finished watching the older Star Wars Episodes.
Myra let us borrow her Christmas gifts of Episodes IV, V, and VI, and considering I hadn't seen them in... something resembling 10 years, I remembered quite a bit. I saw them in theatres when they were re-released in their digitally remastered forms. But now that they're on DVD, it was really great to see themin full. We finisehd "Return of the Jedi" tonight. I love the Ewoks! And Han Solo. Amazingly cute in both cases :)

And now, in typical Annemarie Fashion, I am staying up way later than I should, so that when I wake up at noon tomorrow, I'll feel guilty for sleeping in so late. And maybe I can get cracking on some of the things I'm supposed to do, like clean house, finish projects I started and get organized. I hope I'm this motivated tomorrow!

Sorry for the lack of posts

Been kinda bored and not doing too much here at home. I'm just enjoying being home. Considering what to do for housing next year, making Christmas gifts, hanging out with Kevin, watching movies, enjoying ROTK Extended Version more than anything else in the world, and other such things. Oh, and if you ever get the chance to play Sims2, don't... it's damn addicting! And my sister refuses to leave my computer now! (hers doesn't have a DVD drive, so she's gotta use mine)... Chcolate is GOOD!

What the hell am I doing?

I'm very afraid of the list of things "to do" that I just compiled a few minutes ago. Albeit most of it is knitting and organizing, but that's what constitutes much of my room right now: yarn and... well, mess. I don't know if a month will be sufficient to do the revamping and organizing I need to do, but I guess I'll just have to deal with it. Things I need to do tomorrow include:
-giving my best friend a birthday present (since I didn't get to do so at all this weekend)
-going to Wal-Mart for necessary organizational materials
-going to the library to see Mrs. Wiley
-going by St. Joe to give salutations to teachers
-getting started on half a million other things

Don't be surprised if it appears I've fallen off the face of the planet... I haven't... I'm just swamped.

As Tolkien would say (and I've said before)....

It is finished.

Semester Numero Uno at the University of Texas at Austin is in the bag. 7 more to go. I think I did alright (at least a B) on my Geology final... I was sort of bleh about it... hopefully my grade won't be bleh. Had a FAN-TABULOUS dinner with Daddy at Stubbs .... BARBEQUE.... YUMMY! (Ok, I'll stop with the ellipses now). Tomorrow, bright and early, I'll head out to do some last-minute thingamajigs, like sell my books back at the Co-op, turn in my paper to Ms. Hynes for Irish-American Lit, and pack up my lovely computer before heading down to Brownsville. Oh, Daddy also agreed to take me to the YARN STORE... I am going to try to teach myself how to knit socks this winter... tee hee hee. You may very well receive a pair if you are a friend/relative of mine, or if you pay me. If you really want to know about what I blab on about with knitting, visit my other blog. If you're not interested, Goodnight! See you in Brownsville! (retch...gag... Austin can kick Brownsville's boo-tay any day. I hate Brownsville. I heart Austin.)

Things that Happened Today:

[Music:] Weird Al Yankovic - Ebay
[Mood:] Happy and frantic which will turn into elated and accomplished

1. I woke up at 9:15 today, got dressed, freaked out at my hair and proceeded to straighten it.
2. I went to see my Archaeology professor, and I found out that I made an A in the class.
3. I then proceeded to the Geology review, and then went to exchange some knitting needles.
4. When I came back, I realized that my once-pretty, straight and sleek hair had turned into a puff from the rain. Just dandy.
5. I'm almost done with the bag I'm knitting.
6. I'm procrastinating on everything else, because I want the damn bag to be finished. Then I can do things like study and write my paper.
7. I found out that the author of one of my favorite blogs is publishing a book. That makes me happy.
8. I saw a girl in a lobster hat. It was like a beanie, but with two lobster claws and big googly eyes sticking out of the top. It was weird.
9. I discovered that not only is Voldie in possession of a nasal, raspy annoying voice, he also has a LISP!!!! It just makes him that much more evil.
10. I sat around thinking of the great time I had on Friday with Laura and company.

I'm pretty happy right now. Procrastinatory? Yes. But happy.

Which Hellinistic School of Thought Would You Belong To?

You are a Sceptic.
You are a Sceptic.
Philosophical skepticism originated in ancient
Greek philosophy. One of its first proponents
was Pyrrho of Elis (c. 360-275 B.C.), who
travelled and studied as far as India, and
propounded the adoption of 'practical'
skepticism. Subsequently, in the 'New Academy'
Arcesilaos (c. 315-241 B.C.) and Carneades (c.
213-129 B.C.) developed more theoretical
perspectives, whereby conceptions of absolute
truth and falsity were refuted. Carneades
criticised the views of the Dogmatists,
especially supporters of Stoicism, asserting
that absolute certainty of knowledge is
impossible. Sextus Empiricus (c. A.D. 200), the
main authority for Greek skepticism, developed
the position further, incorporating aspects of
empiricism into the basis for asserting
knowledge.

Greek skeptics criticised the Stoics, accusing them
of dogmatism. For the skeptics, the logical
mode of argument was untenable, as it relied on
propositions which could not be said to be
either true or false without relying on further
propositions. This was the argument of infinite
regress, whereby every proposition must rely on
other propositions in order to maintain its
validity. In addition, the skeptics argued that
two propositions could not rely on each other,
as this would create a circular argument (as p
implies q and q implies p). For the skeptics
logic was thus an inadequate measure of truth
which could create as many problems as it
claimed to have solved. Truth was not, however,
necessarily unobtainable, but rather an idea
which did not yet exist in a pure form.
Although skepticism was accused of denying the
possibility of truth, in actual fact it appears
to have mainly been a critical school which
merely claimed that logicians had not
discovered truth.

What Literature Classic Are You?

Lord of the rings
J.R.R. Tolkien: Lord of the Rings. You are
entertaining and imaginative, creating whole
new worlds around yourself. Well loved, you
have a whole league of imitators, none of which
is quite as profound as you are. Stories and
songs give a spark of joy in the middle of your
eternal battle with the forces of evil.

I have a pretty much guaranteed A in another, Irish-American Lit and Culture
I'll know for sure how I did in Intro to Archaeology on Monday, but I hope it's an A
I have a Geology final on Thursday, and I need at least an 86 to get an A.
4.0 is on the way, baby!

Tomorrow it shall be finished

Quote of the day: "For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there will you long to return." --Leonardo da Vinci

What I'm Listening To: Brobdingnagian Bards - Lily the Pink
I'm Feeling: Procrastinatory and Hungry

I have two final exams tomorrow. And tomorrow is the last day of class. YAY!!! After that I only have one final exam and a final paper. Then it is finished for the semester! Sweetness! Plus, I'm going to go to Laura's house tomorrow to watch Bridget Jones. And I get to meet her fiance, Higley. Hahaha I'll be the only person in the house without a boyfriend... except Laura's housemate Jen. I have a feeling there are going to be quite a few sappy females there... Ah well. By the way, I advise you to listen to "Lily the Pink" if you have a speedy connection. It's HILARIOUS!!!!

Me. Looking like a hippie the other day. This is what Austin, Texas hippie vibes do to you: you look like a weirdo. Just look at those birkenstocks and olive green socks and the indian skirt and the sweatshirt. Well, maybe I don't look like a weirdo, just like a college student. My mom would shudder if she saw me go out in public like that. Luckily, she doesn't read this blog.

A day in the life of a softball sized piece of citrus:

The insane amount of oranges my mom sent me. There were 9 in total. I ate one already, and the next is ready for the slaughter:

doesn't it look all scared at the shiny stainless steel guillotine lying next to it so peacefully?

This is what happened to the orange once I got through with it. Violent, isn't it? I may become a serial killer. See what I do with citrus? Imagine what I could do with something like...apples!
